Kyoto, Japan: Kiyomizu-dera, literally “Pure Water Temple” is officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera, an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple was founded in 798 during the early Heian period. The present buildings were constructed without using a single nail in 1633, ordered by the Tokugawa Iemitsu. It got its name from the waterfall, Kiyomizu , which runs off the nearby hills. It means clear water, or pure water.
